Concentration Camps |

The topic of concentration camps interested me because when I first learned a little about them I was completely baffled by the things that were done to the people who were put into these camps. Concentration camps were first designed in 1933, the year that Hitler was appointed Chancellor and also while World War 2 was going on. The very first concentration was Dachau, which opened in March of 1933. The term "concentration" in itself means "a close gathering of people or things", which you'll read is an accurate definition related to how the living conditions in these camps were. At these camps, people were kept in harsh conditions without a regard to legal imprisonment. They were designed by Hitler mainly to keep Jews in, but others were sent there as well.
These camps were set up all over Germany. The largest of these camps was Auschwitz, which is shown in the picture below on the right. Over 2.1 million were killed just at this one camp. Besides Jews, other groups who were sent to concentration camps included political prisoners, Jehovah's witnesses, and homosexuals. The living conditions in these concentration camps were horrible. Barracks built by the Germans that were meant for 40 people to live in usually held around 700 people. If the prisoners weren't killed by the guards, diseases would eventually spread and kill them off due to the horrible health conditions. There were more than 40,000 camps that stretched across Europe from the French-Spanish border into the conquered Soviet territories, and as far south as Greece and North Africa
